April: Weldon In Action Meetup

We are MOVING the April WIA meeting to WEDNESDAY, the 17th from 5:00 pm to 7pm.  This meeting will be the second Watch Party of our civic engagement project. Having this event on Wednesday allows those who cannot come on Thursday nights to participate.

Members of the School Board will join us in our Weldon In Action meeting on April 17 (note: Wednesday, not the normal Thursday) at HCC to celebrate our partnership in creating a historical legacy for future generations to remember when…

We will show designs of the first phase of the project and talk about its features and the kinds of markers that will depict the history of the school and Weldon’s early history, which began on First Street.  We want to hear your thoughts.

Join us in thanking the School Board for its vision and support in turning a vacant historical site into an outdoor place to bring pleasure to all who enter the area.  It will provide every visitor an opportunity to appreciate the school’s unique contribution to the life and future of Weldon.

Date/Time: Wednesday, April 17, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Check out what Weldon in Action has been up to!

THE TEAM

The Events Designers Team’s purpose is to organize events to draw and lead people to Weldon’s historic district, downtown and riverfront. The last WIA event was the Fall Family Festival in October 2022. It provided area residents and visitors with a bounce house, games, food and a live band. Cartoon characters joined in the festivities to the delight of children. It was held at Weldon’s Riverfront and was a wonderful day to appreciate the beauty that surrounds people in this special town. Charlie Daniel, a native of Weldon and a nationally recognized cartoonist, drew pictures for the youngsters and gave away free T-Shirts with his cartoon “Little Rocky”.

Other events include the Weldon Heritage Speaker Series. The kickoff event on October 14, 2022 was a Celebration of the former Jewish Community in Weldon. Dr. Leonard Rogoff, scholar, and rabbi, shared his research about where those who settled in Weldon came from and where they went. Beginning around the turn of the twentieth century Jewish families settled in Weldon. In so doing, they enriched the social, commercial, and religious life of the community. Their history is an important part of Weldon’s history.

The second in the speaker series took place on February 10, 2023. The day-long event celebrated a Weldon native, Gentry O. Smith, who got his roots and education in Weldon and who now serves as the Assistant Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security in the US Department of State. Assistant Secretary Smith met with area law enforcement officers and town administrators in the morning, spoke to an audience of 200+ guests, educators and students in the afternoon and shared some relaxed conversation with folks in the evening at 51 Sycamore restaurant.  Asst Secretary Smith shared the responsibilities of his office as well as his journey from Weldon to this high post that requires him to travel around the world.  He spoke to area students in hopes of inspiring them and their goals for the future. WIA co-sponsored this event with the Tau Beta Beta chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.

Future events are now being discussed and planned for the Fall of 2023 and early 2024. Want to get involved? Just email us at admin@weldoninaction.com, and we
will connect you!
